November Currently!

Rabbit! Rabbit! Rabbit! It's November 1st :)

I'm linking up with Farley for her monthly currently.

Listening: My fiance is SO excited for the new Star Wars Movie that is coming soon. I told him that we should catch up on the old ones tonight.  I swear it was like I told him he won the lottery! I guess I now know the real way to his heart.

Loving: November means cool weather is in sight! It's like 80 now instead of 90! WAHOOO I love the holidays, even though they always turn into family drama. I love decorating and spending time with my crazy family. I love buying gifts for people and reflecting back on the year.

Thinking: I think I'm all prepared and ready to go for our March wedding and then BAM I wake up and it's NOVEMBER! Only 145 more days left. AHHHHHH So much to do! Time to starting freaking out.

Wanting: We get November 11th off but I really could just use a long weekend. Don't get me wrong, one extra day off will be amazing, but I just need to sleep! Thanksgiving break needs to come sooner!

Needing: October was the first month where I actually made some real money on TPT.  It was a huge milestone month for me! It brought me so much joy waking up to a Cha-Ching and to read valuable, helpful comments from total strangers using products I've made! It just blows my mind that other people out there want to use my ideas.  It's been a great month and I need to spend some time making more products so that every month can feel this way.

Yummy: I love all Thanksgiving foods minus the turkey! haha I especially love my Mom's chocolate pecan pie.  I could eat it for days...yummmmmm.

Time to go snuggle up with the fiance and pup and sleep with my eyes open WATCH Star Wars.

October Currently is Boo-tiful

It's that time again....the first of the month! I'm linking up with Farley over at Oh' Boy 4th Grade.  After this lonnnnggg, hottt, drrryyy summer, I'm welcoming Fall with wide open arms! Bring on the rain and cooler weather!

Meet the Fockers is seriously hilarious.  Being in the engagement stage of my life makes it even more hilarious! The boy is working so hard to bond with my Dad! Love him for that :)

There was a teensy weensy tiny breeze in the air today.  It was AH-MAZING.  80-90 degree days since the start of school = torture.  We literally have "sunny day" recess because it's too hot to be outside. I'm so thankful that our principal supports the sandal, summer dress look!

The start of the school year has hit me across the face and sucked out every ounce of energy I gained over the summer.  Just one extra weekend day would make me so happy! Thanksgiving break come sooner, please.

6 months....6 months! I can't even believe I'm getting married in 6 months! We just booked our tastings and I can't wait to pick out a cake. How amazing is this cake?? Maybe for the shower?

It's basically been revealed that our condo complex is swarming with termites, causing ANOTHER special assessment and making it even hard to sell.  I'm between a rock and hard place with my house and it's NOT fun. BOOOO

My bestie friend in the whole world had a baby! I'm Auntie Katie and I can't even believe it.  Shout out to my amazing Momma friend and her sweet sweet baby boy :) He's boo-tiful and so is she!

Just finished making a fresh batch of pumpkin snickerdoodles to ring in October.
Happy Almost Friday :)

August Currently!

I absolutely love this link up with Farley from Oh Boy Fourth Grade! It's simple, fun, and a great way to connect with other bloggers :) I splurged and bought the KG Font license...hence the font explosion below!

Listening: I love love love country music and always have it on in the background! I am going to the Darius Rucker concert tonight so I have to get in the mood :)

Loving: I had some friends over last night which forced me to clean my house.  I spent hours cleaning yesterday and now I'm really loving the neat, dust free, sparkling house! It'll last for all of....5 mins!

Thinking: I've been doing a lot of reflecting about the coming year. I had my first school nightmare last night....must mean the year is starting soon!  I am moving classrooms, adding a leadership position, getting married, new principal, new vice principal.... It's just going to be a lot of change! BRING IT ON!!

Wanting: I've had a lot of big expenses come my way lately and I am feeling really stressed about it.  I need new tires, a new computer, wedding this and wedding that....the list is endless!!  If I could just win the lottery, everything would be solved!!!

Needing: I feel like there is so much going on in my life that I need to set some real, attainable goals to get focused.  My biggest goal this year is to take TPT/Blogging more seriously. It's so intimidating but I just need to suck it up and DO IT!

B2SRAK: I love this category! I think this should be all year, not just at the beginning of the year.  I really want to order Bettie's Bake Shop cookies for my wedding, but I wanted to try them first.  I just ordered some for my teammates.  It's a Win-Win! B2S gifts AND wedding taste testers.

Happy August!

Teacher Faves - BTS 2015

Isn't the best part about going back to school the "back to school" shopping? I've started to grab some of my faves since school is just about a month away!

I'm excited to see what other teachers just can't live without!

Who doesn't love Mr. Sketch markers? I need to stock up on some new ones this year.  Last year my "teacher" markers all ended up in the student marker bin! These are just the best markers for coloring, making charts, etc.

Getting back into the school routine is so hard! After a summer of eating, sleeping, and doing whatever I want, whenever I want, being on a schedule is hard (even though I secretly miss the schedule!).  I love to have Kind bars and mini bags of popcorn in my desk, just in case I start to get hangry....you all know what I mean!!!

A cute frame for your desk is a must have! I snagged this doggie themed mini frame at Michaels. When I have those tough days at school or I am going on my 13th hour of work, looking down to a picture of my favorite people always brings a smile to my face.  It's crazy to think that I can fill this frame with a wedding photo in just 8 short months! #notimetoteachmustweddingplan

I love that my birthday is in the summer because I can ask for this overpriced Erin Condren planner for my birthday and not feel guilty about it! It's a WIN-WIN! My puppy, Diego, loved helping me open it! I know teachers are moving to "electronic" planners but I just love paper and pens too much! Call me old school!

I lose my voice on the first week of school almost every year! I snagged these new water bottles recently and I'm excited to start using them.  With it being 80+ degrees right now, I've got to stay hydrated!

This makes me both excited for school to start and depressed that school is starting.... Time to go to the beach and soak up that last bit of summer!

So Cal Link Up

I've said it before and I'll say it again....Southern California is the most amazing place in the entire world!!! I am SO lucky to live here and I'm very excited to be a part of the So Cal Link Up! I took a break from the blogging world for awhile and this just seemed like the perfect way to get back into the swing of things!
Easy Teaching Tools
I'm 100% a beach person. Snow, rain, freezing temperatures...all thing cold terrify me.  I live in a small town in San Diego called Solana Beach. I'm at the beach multiple times a week.  I just happen to live a mile from the beach. Not just any beach...but DOG beach!
If I'm not teaching, I'm at dog beach with my love, Diego the beagle. He's one spoiled puppy!

Picture perfect sunsets all year long!

 Solana Beach Cliffs
View from happy hour with a friend!

So, are you ready to move to California yet? I like to think of the ridiculous taxes as "Sunny Day" taxes :)
I've partially been MIA because this happened in April...AT THE BEACH!!!! He did the BEST job ever and included all my favorite people in world.  I'm the luckiest :) The next day my student's immediately asked me, "Do we get to come to the wedding?"

And of course...we will be getting married at the BEACH! :)...with NO STUDENTS present!

I'm slowly getting into the groove of creating items for TPT.  Hopefully I will find some inspiration at the TPT Vegas Conference this summer! At the end of the year, I try to crank out as many little things as I can before I leave for summer break.  I will be making a few of these for next year.  Enjoy these Absent Folder covers! Print, glue, laminate, bam....set and ready for August!

March Currently!

Boy does time fly! That's right teachers....one month closer to SUMMER! I'm linking up with Farley for the March Currently.

Listening - It was a crazy rain day at school today. Open campus + downpour = fun...said no teacher ever!!!!

Loving - Spring strawberries in San Diego are the BEST!! They seriously taste like candy. You get them from this little tiny stand on the side of the road for an outrageous $9.  Worth every single penny. They are HUGE just amazing.

Thinking - March is one of my favorite months of the year! Not only did I live in Ireland for a summer in college, but I've got some Irish in me...Foley..sound Irish, right? I love the green, the shamrocks, Read Across America, St. Patty's Day celebrations, and of course...SPRING BREAK!

I've started decorating my house with some green goodies!

Wanting - One of my besties, Shout Out to Sara!!!!, lives in Tennessee. She decided to get married and run away to TN!!! Booo Come back to San Diego!! I miss her dearly and can't wait to see her this summer, if not earlier :)

Needing - I guess they call it Spring Cleaning for a reason. There's something about this time of the year that makes me want to just cleanse my life of everything. I started this weekend with my file box but I need to clean the closet next, and the kitchen, and my classroom...that's a whole other story.

Spring Break - Our Spring Break is the last week of March. I can't wait! The boy got a few days off so we will actually get to spend a few days together....not working...relaxing....WOW. So excited! We are going to go to Palm Springs for a fews day and relax by the pool. My sweet baby D is turning 2! Time to parttttyyyy.

Throwback picture to his first birthday party! Hats and all.

Happy Monday Friends!

Fraction and Decimals in my Classroom!

Our district gave us 9 weeks to teach fractions and decimals.  Seems like a long time, right? Well, we're on week 6 and EKKK we need more time!!! Before we start our next unit, I reflected back on what we've done and where we need to go. Below are some things I've done with the kiddos over the last few weeks.

Anchor Charts:

The best feeling is when you are working with a student and they say, "Wait, let me look at the chart." My students depend on these anchor charts and refer to them during math practices, small group time, and games. Sometimes I pre-create the anchor chart and we just review it in class. Sometimes, I write it as we learn and sometimes I have the students help me create it.

The students created these rules as we walked through the lesson.
The students each got a fraction and sorted them into a group.
I created this after I introduced adding and subtracting fractions.

I created and posted this before we did decimals so students started to see the correlation between the two.
Active Participation:

Having the students actively participate in every aspect of a lesson is not only good teaching, but it's a big focus in my district. We have a lot of professional development that helps us learn how to make active participation a reality in the classroom. In my latest PD, we talked about using music in the classroom.  I found some kid friendly music and sent it to my school computer (Lego Movie soundtrack, Happy by Pharrell Williams, and Taylor Swift songs).

I threw together a simple powerpoint that led the students through the lesson called "Decimal Music Match." I started by creating very simple decimal and fraction cards. I taped them under their chairs.

I used two different colors on purpose.

I made equivalent fractions and decimals using numbers in the hundredths and thousandths place. I used two different color markers on purpose.

The students were SO excited to find something under their chairs. I told them that when the music starts they need to pass the cards around to their classmates. It doesn't matter who you pass it to, you just want to pass it as many times possible. When the music stops, they need to look at the board. On the board, I had simple instructions that looked like this.

I was pleasantly surprised how well the students did with this. By the second round, they automatically looked at the board and followed the directions. It was also a great way for me to assess in the moment. I could instantly see who was engaged and who wasn't. I could see who knew how to turn a fraction into a decimal and who could compare their fraction to 1/2. I loved the conversations that students had with one another

The lesson went so well, I created "Decimal Music Match Part II." My powerpoint looked like this.

In order to do this second part, I had to create decimals on hundreds charts. I decided to make the students do the work! This started some great conversations on what decimals can look like on hundreds charts. They created some fun designs! "Decimal Music Match Part II" ended up being a great way to reinforce ideas I've already taught and to reteach students who were struggling.

Using Manipulatives:

I love using manipulatives whenever I can! During problem solving, we talk a lot about what tools are the best to use for a certain problem.  So, I've been teaching the students how to use place value blocks to see fractions and decimals.  We practice building them, starting simple and getting more complex.

He built 0.35 and 0.25.
Once the students got confident building decimals, we pushed them together to demonstrate adding decimals. Our next step is drawing them in an addition sentence, then using the algorithm.  Starting with manipulatives gives the students the visual foundation they need. Instead of following the steps of an algorithm, they make sense of the problem before they solve it.

Reteaching and Games:

Twice a week I try to squeeze in some reteaching! In order to reteach, I need a small group of students that struggle with similar concepts. I have my students split into three small groups that I change often, based on need. During math centers, I work with one of these small groups. This week we have been focusing on "Close Reading" math problems. I thought ... we close read passages all week, why not apply the same concepts to math!

My biggest challenge is ... what do the other students do while you are working with a small group? And, how do I make sure they are on task and working without standing behind them the whole time!?

My first thought was...FUN. The students need to be doing something FUN to be engaged and focused. So, I have one group playing math games and the other group doing a math practice in their notebooks.  I've collected games over the years and made ones along the way.  I created these fraction and decimals games to help my students practice fundamental skills. Check them out on my TPT store!

I'm excited to see how my students preform on their unit assessment in a few weeks!
